Up for sale is an original vintage Vintage Auto Racing Association—VARA—Chrysler Class Winner Checkered Racing Flag from the Chrysler-sponsored era of VARA competition. This is not an ordinary decorative racing flag or modern reproduction. Historical information regarding this style of flag was confirmed through direct correspondence with the Vintage Auto Racing Association.
According to VARA, these Chrysler-sponsored checkered flags were presented only to class winners during official VARA race weekends throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Chrysler’s sponsorship of these flags reportedly continued until approximately 2000. The flag features a bold black-and-white checkered design with the official Vintage Auto Racing Association VARA emblem prominently printed in the center. Chrysler logos appear near both the upper and lower borders.
The flag retains its original wooden staff and original manufacturer’s tag identifying the material as 100% polyester and the country of manufacture as Taiwan R.O.C. VARA confirmed that these winner flags were used during race weekends held at venues including Willow Springs Raceway, Buttonwillow Raceway Park, Fontana Speedway, Palm Springs Road Course, Tustin Thunder in Irvine, and Las Vegas Speedway. The exact winning driver, race class, track, and race weekend connected to this particular flag remain unknown. It was acquired from an estate sale in Costa Mesa, California.
