History of the Plant

• Construction: Henry E. Huntington organized the Pacific Light and Power Company in 1902, and the plant began operating around 1907 on the site of an old salt works. [1, 2]

• Operation: The massive steam plant burned heavy unrefined crude oil to generate electricity, supplying power notably for the Red Car electric railway system. [1]

• Later Years: By 1913, the plant was largely relegated to emergency use, eventually closing down entirely before being demolished in 1946 to make way for later steam plant developments on the property. [1]
