Rare 1935 Pre WWII Esso Jerry Can With Early Round Esso Logo

The Anglo-American Oil Company (trading in the UK under the newly introduced Esso brand) was aggressively expanding its footprint using British and international motorsport.
Pre WWII British 2 gallon motor spirit cans served critical corporate branding roles on garage forecourts around the country and this can featured the highly distinctive early Esso livery.
The circular embossing enclosing the logo makes this 1935 Valor 2-gallon petrol can a distinct transition piece in British Petroliana history.
Design Context & Rarity The Logo Transition
Before the mid 1930s the Anglo-American Oil Company primarily distributed fuel under the Pratts Motor Spirit name. When they fully rebranded to Esso, the earliest cans produced by the Valor Company used this large circular frame layout before standardizing into the more common oval bordered Esso logo seen throughout the late 1930s and later WWII era.
The Date Stamp
The base is stamped VALOR 5 35pinpointing its exact manufacture to May 1935. Finding these early 1935 circular variants complete with their embossed brass Esso caps is rare, as many were either heavily damaged, scrapped or fitted with replacement caps over the decades
