Original 1949 Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) 83rd and Final National Encampment commemorative badge and ribbon from Indianapolis, Indiana, marking the historic final national gathering of Union Civil War veterans. This beautifully detailed three-piece bronze badge features a magnificent spread-wing eagle perched above crossed artillery cannons and cannonballs, a central commemorative plaque honoring the first GAR National Encampment held November 20, 1866, and the final encampment beginning August 28, 1949, both in Indianapolis. Suspended below is a striking portrait medallion honoring Theodore A. Penland, Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. The original golden-yellow grosgrain ribbon remains attached, along with the original pin assembly. The reverse of the portrait medallion bears the manufacturer\'s mark Metal Arts Co., Rochester, New York. This historically significant badge commemorates the 83rd and final national encampment of the GAR, held more than eight decades after the Civil War ended, when only a handful of Union veterans remained. The badge\'s design and construction are also documented in Fleischer\'s sales\' 2025 historical militaria sale catalog, providing an additional reference for collectors researching this important commemorative issue. Measuring approximately 4 inches in overall length, this badge retains attractive aged bronze coloration, beautifully detailed relief work, and its original components. Age-related wear includes some loss of finish on the reverse of the eagle, minor spotting and surface patina on the metal, and light ribbon edge wear. An exceptional piece of American Civil War veterans\' memorabilia representing the closing chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic and the generation of soldiers who served the Union during the Civil War.
