Up for sale is a remarkably well-preserved, authentic 1881 W.H. Thayer Universal Kitchen Tool. Patented by William Henry Thayer on May 24, 1881, this ingenious 19th-century multi-tool is a legendary piece of American kitchen Americana. Designed as a "7-in-1" space saver for Victorian-era households, it combined several vital everyday functions into a single cast iron implement.
Functions Include:
- Stove Lid Lifter: For lifting hot iron burners on wood/coal stoves.
- Pot & Kettle Carrier: Curved hooks designed to securely haul heavy cookware.
- Trivet: Heavy-duty base to protect surfaces from hot pots.
- Meat Tenderizer / Pie Crimper: Notched teeth and specialized edges for food preparation.

This a guaranteed original 19th-century casting, not a modern reproduction. The cast lettering is remarkably crisp and perfectly legible.

The structural Integrity of the piece Excellent. There are absolutely no cracks, chips, structural breaks, or repairs anywhere on the frame—a rarity for cast iron of this age.
Smooth texture with no deep rust pitting. The piece retains its beautiful, authentic dark historic patina, showing only minimal, superficial light surface oxidation/flash rust consistent with 140+ years of age.
This piece was found in a 1600s estate in Rhode Island in the kitchen.
