Up for sale/sale is an incredibly rare, authentic turn-of-the-century Murdock’s Tropical Brand Pure Red Pepper spice tin.

This highly collectible 1 ½ oz. piece was distributed by the C.A. Murdock Mfg. Co. out of Kansas City, Missouri, which operated from 1882 to 1915. The container itself features a tiny manufacturing hallmark at the bottom edge reading "U.S. CIN. O.", identifying it as an early patent-sifter canister manufactured by the United States Can Company in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Design & Features:

  • Features a vibrant, multi-colored front graphic of a tropical figure beneath a palm tree carrying a basket of fruit.

  • The side panels list other items in the Murdock line, including coffee, spices, mustard, cream salad, flavoring extracts, and bluing.

  • Features the original metal top and an integrated metal rotating sifter gate on the bottom.

Condition

This tin is in excellent antique condition given its fragile composite construction and age (over 110 years old).

  • The lithographed paper label remains remarkably bold and colorful with sharp text and imagery.

  • Shows light, honest age-related shelf wear, minor paper darkening/staining along the lower right front edge, and slight paper chipping near the upper metal rim.

  • The top lid and bottom metal sifter have a wonderful, untouched aged patina with minor oxidation.

  • Please review all high-resolution photos closely to judge the exact condition for yourself.

This is a fantastic, scarce crossover piece perfect for collectors of antique advertising, vintage kitchen lithographs, or Kansas City history. It will be packaged with extreme care to preserve the delicate paper label during shipping.
