A rare small antique pocket compass marked on the white face “Pillischer 88 New Bond Street London.”
The address was the London premises of Jacob Pillischer, who traded from 88 New Bond Street from approximately 1853 until the business closed in 1947. The compass therefore dates from within this period, although I would suggest a late Victorian date, circa 1860–1890.
The compass comes complete with its original blue velvet-lined leather case. The case measures approximately 1½ inches in diameter, with the compass itself measuring approximately 1¼ antique condition overall, with age-appropriate wear to the leather case and some surface oxidation to the exterior metal case. The white compass face remains bright, although there appears to be a tiny chip next to “NNW”. The original glass crystal is clear and free from chips or scratches.
- The compass appears to be working, but its accuracy has not been tested and therefore cannot be guaranteed. The button at the top pulls up and down to release or hold the compass needle; this button is stiff in operation.
A scarce and interesting piece of Victorian scientific/optical history, offered in its original case.
