Rare Antique Religious Textile Artwork 19th Century Catholic Saint Bishop For Sale

A beautiful example of 19th-century ecclesiastical devotional art, this finely executed silkwork depicts a revered Catholic bishop saint standing in blessing, clothed in richly ornamented episcopal vestments and holding a traditional bishop\'s crozier. The composition is distinguished by its remarkable craftsmanship, with delicately woven silk threads creating luminous colors and intricate textures throughout the garments, landscape, and architectural background. Adding to its artistic appeal, the saint\'s face and raised hand are carefully hand-painted, lending the figure a lifelike warmth and expressive character that contrasts beautifully with the shimmering embroidered silk.During the 19th century, works such as this were painstakingly created by highly skilled artisans and, in some cases, within convent workshops where embroidery was elevated to a fine art. Thousands of individually placed silk stitches in varying colors and directions were used to create depth, shading, and the illusion of light, requiring extraordinary patience, precision, and artistic talent. The painted flesh tones of the face and hands were then carefully applied by hand, seamlessly blending painting and textile art into a single composition. The result is a richly detailed devotional image that possesses a warmth and dimensionality unattainable through ordinary printing or weaving techniques. The frame measures 16.25 inches high, 13.5 inches wide, and 2 inches deep, while the visible artwork measures 10.75 inches high by 8.25 inches wide. The artwork is presented under glass in an elegant period gold-painted wooden frame that beautifully complements its devotional character and enhances its visual presence. Rich tones of crimson, gold, ivory, and soft blue have remained wonderfully vibrant, reflecting the exceptional quality of the original workmanship and the enduring beauty of the silk. Good antique condition, there is some areas of loss above the buildings.
