A unique collection of amber fragments recovered from the famous clay pits of Sayreville, NJ. These specimens were personally collected on the surface over 30 years ago from a locality that is now largely inaccessible to collectors.

The Historical Significance:

New Jersey amber is the oldest amber in the Americas known to contain insect inclusions, including the world’s oldest documented ants. Unlike more common ambers, Raritan amber is prized for its rarity and its unique chemical composition (it lacks succinic acid and contains traces of sulfur).

Condition:

These are natural, raw fragments. Please note that New Jersey amber is naturally more brittle than Baltic amber and should be handled with care. The pieces show the characteristic yellow-to-reddish-brown hues typical of the South Amboy Fire Clay member.
