Rare vintage Knives of Alaska Brown Bear / Cub Bear combination knife set with genuine stag handles and original fitted leather combination sheath.
This is an early patent-pending example of the Brown Bear, the distinctive design that became Knives of Alaska's signature knife. The Brown Bear is stamped “PAT. PEND.” on one side of the blade and “MADE IN U.S.A.” on the reverse.
Charles Allen filed the design patent for the Brown Bear-style blunt nose knife on May 25, 1993. U.S. Design Patent D348,380 was granted July 5, 1994. Knives of Alaska identifies the Brown Bear as the company's first knife, and the Brown Bear Combo won Most Innovative American Made Design at the 1994 International Blade Show. The PAT. PEND. marking places this example with the early patent-pending production of the design.
Set includes:
• Brown Bear Skinner/Cleaver
• Cub Bear caping knife
• Genuine stag handles
• Full-tang construction
• Brass handle pins
• Brown Bear marked PAT. PEND.
• Brown Bear marked MADE IN U.S.A.
• Original fitted brown leather combination sheath
The Brown Bear shows surface spotting, patina and signs of age/use. The smaller Cub Bear presents considerably cleaner. Stag handles have attractive natural character. Leather sheath shows age, staining and wear. See photos closely for the exact condition of each piece.
An uncommon early stag-handled example of the Brown Bear/Cub Bear combination and an interesting piece from the beginning of Knives of Alaska production.
