Original illustrated vintage c. 1870 cardboard chocolate box with gold metallic trim around top. Brightly colored, nicely detailed chromolithograph picture on the cover depicts a horse drawn French “Ambulance de la Presse” ambulance, and EMTs of the day, carrying a stretcher-bound wounded soldier up the steps of a presumed hospital. As they ascend, we see a moment of eye contact between the officer and an attending nurse.
The wooden ambulance and the officer’s uniform in the illustration are likely from the time of the Franco-Prussian War, 1870-1871, though a different period is possible.
The box is in very good condition for its age, showing some signs of wear and slight smudges. The illustration on the box cover is in excellent condition.
