This is a lovely bone china figurine from Royal Doulton, of an elegant woman named Janice in a beautiful black dress from the Tudor period of the mid 1500’s. She is delicately stepping forward, with a book held in her hands. Her blonde hair with a touch of red is held back with a black and white band under the white gable hood. The dress is black with funnel sleeves and a skirt panel in pale green with her dark pink shoe peeking out from under her skirt panel. Notice how beautiful her eyes are and the delicate coloring of her cheeks and lips.
The backstamp shows this piece was made in England with this pattern copyrighted in 1948 by Royal Doulton, famous for their bone china tea ware and their beautiful figurines, like this one. Her Royal Doulton HN number is 2165. HN is for Harry Nixon who was head of the Royal Doulton painting department and joined Doulton in 1900. Margaret Davies designed this figurine, Janice, for Royal Doulton and she was made in England, available from 1955 to 1965. The initials of artist are handpainted on the bottom in green, TP. Eventually, in 2004, production of Royal Doulton figurines was moved from England to a factory in Thailand.
Janice is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or crazing and is ready to be admired and displayed in your china cabinet or on a shelf or your mantle! Examining her closely, I can feel not as much glaze was applied to the band of her gable hood, so it is not as smooth as the glaze on the rest of her. A real work of art!
She stands about 7 & 1/2 inches tall, and is 4 & 3/4 inches wide at the base.
She was made after the end of the Second World War. With the war effort, England closed down many potteries so workers could join the military or work making munitions. Later, in 1942, the potters that were open were restricted from decorating their china, to save energy and labor for the war effort. So this beautifully decorated figurine was made sometime after all that, when England was working at recovering from WWII.
