SAN FRANCISCO, Port of Gold; 1947 First Edition; fine in dj; labor strife, etc.San Francisco:
Port of Gold
by William Martin CampThis is a First Edition hardback book published in 1947 by Doubleday. It measures 6 x 8.5 inches in size, and is 518 pages long. It is in excellent and attractive condition, with a dust jacket that shows some sun tanning and light wear. The author was the night city editor of the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper before serving in the Marines during World War II. A resident of Berkeley, Camp lectured on news writing and reporting at the Univ. of California, prior to becoming a full-time book author. This volume is sub-titled “The Life Story of the City by the Golden Gate.” The dust jacket says:“ SAN FRANCISCO: PORT OF GOLD recounts a history that has been wildly colorful and exciting. Rich in adventure and spiced with anecdote, this book tells the story of San Francisco Bay from the days of the gold rush and whaling ships to the explosive labor difficulties of today.
“Part One tells of the lure and lore of California in the days when the word was anonymous with gold and California was ruled by the vigilantes.
“Part Two is the chronicle of early get-rich schemes that flourished in the first San Francisco. The author also describes other cities and towns on the bay and tells how the port came of age.
“Part Three tells the thrilling story of men and ships, shanghaiers, slavers, and the sailors who plied the coast.
“Part Four is a complete review of the stormy labor history of San Francisco from the days of open warfare between shipowners and sailors to present-day disturbances.
“Written by a man who knows the port city as it was and as it is today, SAN FRANCISCO: PORT OF GOLD, is both a valuable record and a book of fascinating history.”Steven Ross of the Naval War College wrote:
“Connolly is one of the leading Napoleonic scholars, whose books are standard references for others in the field; he also writes beautifully, and his works—especially this latest volume—are a genuine pleasure to read.”
