“Ethan Allen’s Drama of the Revolution in Blank Verse”.
Also known as “Washington; or, The Revolution”.
Inscribed and SIGNED by the author-playwright Ethan Allen in 1901.
This Ethan Allen (1832-1911) is a descendant
of the American Revolutionary War hero, Colonel Ethan Allen,
leader of the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont.
He was a lawyer, Union Army officer, and author, who served as a Colonel of the 3rd Regiment of the Merchants Brigade in New York City during the Civil War.
Allen actively recruited and commanded the 3rd Regiment of the Merchants Brigade of New York to help defend the city and protect merchant shipping during the Civil War.
After his military service, he became a prominent Manhattan attorney and a dedicated member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Born on May 12, 1832, he lived for several years in Manhattan and died at the age of 79 on December 7, 1911. He is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
He is best known for his 1895 historical drama, “Washington, Or, The Revolution”.
The last image is a biography only found in an early copy of the play.
A historical drama in two parts, it seems to have been published separately first, and then together in this one volume, copyrighted 1895 & 1899.
Inscribed to Rev. William Walsh, New York, in 1901, and then by Walsh to Charles Irving Brown in 1904. I can find no definitive information on either.
Condition:
I’m no book maven, but it looks in good condition with the exception of the portrait and title page each having a tear on the lower third at the spine side. (Image included of tear.)
Also a larger tear of the rear board attachment at the end paper. (See image.)
Inside looks remarkably good. There is 1 or 2 very small period ink marks.
Although the edge has a water damaged-looking mark, it does NOT carry to the inside pages.
There is a newspaper clipping partially glued onto the end paper about celebrating Washington’s birthday that appears to be from 1901 or 1902 based on content.
5 3/4” x 7 3/4”.
