STANLEY No.4-1/2 TYPE 18 1946 - 1947 SMOOTH SOLE PLANE
Little bit of information on a type 18. Unlike the no.3 , 4 and 5 which Stanley considered as fast selling planes. The 4-1/2 , 5-1/4 , 5-1/2 , 6 , 7 , and 8 were slow moving so when Stanley put the raised ridge on the type 16 they only did this on the no.3 , 4 and 5 at first. Stanley used up all its old TYPE 15 castings on the 5-1/4 , 4-1/2 , 5-1/2 ,6 , 7 and 8\'s the only thing they changed was the hardware. The slow moving planes didn\'t get the raise ridge till they ran out of the type 15 castings. That why this type 18 does not have the raised ridges.
The japanning on the body & frog was cleaned very well then given a coat of wax.
All the hardware was cleaned and oiled. All screw holes cleaned and oiled.
Tote and knob are excellent. I\'m not a big fan of the black finish I stripped them smoothed them out and refinished them.
The cheeks were hand lapped. rail\'s were cleaned & smoothed out.
The sole was hand lapped & the edge\'s relieved to enhance planes performance. All lapping is done on a large granite slab My opinion the only way to do it right.
Frog seat and face lapped.
Cutter was cleaned and lapped then sharpened. extremely sharp cut\'s excellent shavings. Little pitting on the top of the cutter nothing but cosmetic no issue at all.
Cap iron was cleaned and lapped.
Lever cap was cleaned then lapped at contact point.
The plane works superb. Will make a superb user or addition to a collection.
Ihave been selling my planes on for over 23 years with a superb rating. I have always strived to put out a excellent plane at a reasonableprice and back it with a \"\"\"\"100 percent satisfaction guarantee\"\"\"\".
