Set of 4 Rare St. Augustine"Ye Olde English"Welsh Rabbit Dinner PlatesUp for sale is a rare and charming set of early 1900's St. Augustine collectible dinner plates. They are heavy ceramic, measuring 10" in diameter and are hand painted on transferware. The motto around the rim is a humorous rhyme in praise of cheese, or, to be specific, the cheese in a Welsh Rarebit (deliberately spelled "Rabbit" here).[Note: Welsh rarebit is a savory melted cheese sauce served over toasted bread. The name originated NOT in Wales, but rather was an 18th Century English insult implying that common folk - particularly theWelsh - could not afford real meat.]
Each plate features a country scene with two rabbits in the foreground, one popping out from his hole.
Around the rim is written: "Some sing the praises of Camembert, And other of Fromage de Brie, But neither compare with a Welsh Rabbit Rare, For that's just the cheese for me."
The plates are all in very good antique condition. Most have the usual characteristic glaze crazing typical of this pottery. Some discoloration, mostly on the back side, and a few very fine hairlines visible from the back on one.See all photos for details.
