This is a Stanley No. 289 filletster and rabbet plane, an 8-1/2 inch cast iron plane with a skewed cutter, an adjustable fence on a steel rod, and a depth stop. "Stanley No 289" is cast on the side, and the body carries cast patent dates inside. The iron is stamped Stanley with the SW heart (a Sweetheart iron), and the plane likely dates to the 1920s or 1930s.
The 289 is made for cutting rabbets and fillister cuts along the edge of a board. The fence slides on its rod and locks with a thumbscrew, and the skewed cutter gives a clean shearing cut across the grain. It has a cast iron pistol-grip handle, a knurled cutter adjustment screw, and a clamp for the iron. I have not tested it on wood.
Please see the photos for condition. The japanning is mostly intact with wear and light rust spotting near the nose and fence, and a few flecks of paint on the handle. The fence rod and thumbscrews are clean. Ships well packed.
