Starrett 72 Thickness Gage 22 Leaves,.004 to .025 in. by .001 w/Locking For Sale

The L.S. Starrett Company began business in 1880 in Athol, Massachusetts and remains in business today as a maker of machinist\'s tools and precision measuring instruments. We do not know when the Clamp was made and did little to discover. The stamped-in labeling, “The L.S.Starrett Co., etc.” (see images), no longer appears on Starrett’s products. It’s oldish! Probably \'60s or \'70s and probably made in USA.Starrett still manufactures and sells Thickness Gages, but none labeled as No.72. We were able to find reference to a Gage with 22 Leaves in “The Tools and Rules for Precision Measuring: 1984 Edition, L. S. Starrett Co.\", Later editions of Starrett catalogs do not exist on Archive.org or do not include reference to the No.72 Gage. In 1957, thirteen were listed; “Starrett Precision Service Tools : Bulletin No. 802: Issue No. 7 by L. S. Starrett Co., 1957-08-01” Gage is in fully-functional condition. It shows use and there is noticeable discoloration on the Body and on some of the Leaves (see images). Proper and attentive cleaning will remove some of this. There is no evidence of deterioration of the leaves nor evidence of misuse or abuse; all twenty-two leaves are present. straight and lightly oiled. The Locking Mechanism works properly to keep the Leaves in place whether in-use or stored. Even the .016 is there so I could have set the point on my ’73 Beetle instead of using the cover of a pack of matches!The Gage is meant to be used and would no its job at maintaining the original engine of a ’70s Beetle or ’60s muscle car.
