HISTORICALFOOTNOTES: There were threeprintings of this comic book. The 1st and 2nd printings (unknown copies) werepublished by Company & Sons and the 3rd printing (unknown copies) waspublished by The Print Mint. The 1st printing had a 50-cent cover price and the2nd had a 75-cent cover price. The 3rd printing also had a 75-cent cover pricebut can be differentiated from the 2nd printing by the Print Mint logo on thefront cover. Vaughn Frederic Bodé created his signature character Cheech Wizardway back in 1957, when he was merely a lad of 16. Though the yellow-hatted"cartoon messiah" did not officially see print for over a decade, hewent on to become Bodé's best-known and most enduring comic book character.Cheech Wizard appeared in a variety of undergrounds and in a monthly one-pagerwith National Lampoon for several years before Bodé's self-inflicteddeath in 1975 at the tender age of 34.
CheechWizard resides in some sort of fantasy-land jungle or backwoods with a varietyof characters, including his on again/off again lizard pal Razzberry. There areno human males in these backwoods, but there are some luscious women, includingone in particular that Cheech Wizard enjoins for all manners of flocking and slocking(primarily off camera). In fact, Cheech Wizard is primarily concerned aboutonly one thing: his own pleasure, whether that is accompanied by a woman, abeer or just his own company. He is occasionally prone to philosophizing, butprefers to dish out insults with his twisted-syntax dialect. Bodé never allowedCheech Wizard's face to be shown, though it is known that Cheech Wizard removedhis hat on at least a couple of occasions.
CheechWizard maintains a measurable amount of popularity even today. Bodé's uniquecartoon style influenced illustrators and grafitti artists for decades, and hisinfluence can also be seen in certain animated works, including those by hisfriend, Ralph Bakshi. After Bodé's death, Rip Off Press anthologized the CheechWizard oeuvre in a four-issue run of comic books, The Complete Cheech Wizard,which is also available in paperback form. In the decades after Bodé's passing,his son Mark produced additional Cheech Wizard adventures, including comicsthat were partially completed by his father. Mark Bodé's Cheech Wizard comicscome admirably close to replicating his father's singular style, but it is hardto accept that Cheech Wizard can be given life by anyone but Vaughn Bodé.
