The Great Horseshoe Fall, Niagara — Alvan Fisher 13\"x19\" Poster For Sale

POSTER GALLERY ART PRINTS & COLLECTIBLES THE ARTWORK The Great Horseshoe Fall, Niagara — Alvan Fisher 13"x19" Poster

A sweeping rainbow rises through Niagara’s mist above wooded cliffs and awestruck visitors.

This print reproduces Alvan Fisher’s original 1820 oil painting, The Great Horseshoe Fall, Niagara. The Canadian waterfall dominates the scene, with bright cascades, billowing mist and a rainbow framed by dark trees and an expansive sky. Small groups of visitors give the North American landscape a striking sense of scale. The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s 2006 exhibition label discusses this work alongside Fisher’s A General View of the Falls of Niagara as expressions of the excitement of visiting the falls. Tourists look through opera glasses, a woman shields her ears from the roar, and adventurous young men approach the cliff edge, conveying both wonder and danger. This new physical reproduction is produced in Kentucky on luster paper and sold unframed by POSTER GALLERY.About the original artwork

Artist: Alvan Fisher, born Needham, MA 1792-died Dedham, MA 1863
Gallery Label: Two scenes by Fisher (this painting and Fisher's A General View of the Falls of Niagara) capture the thrill of visiting Niagara Falls, a site in upstate New York that quickly became a symbol of the continent's epic scale and natural beauty. Tiny figures throw out their arms as if trying to describe to one another the vastness of what they see. Elegant tourists peer decorously across the chasm through opera glasses, while one young lady covers her ears against the stupendous noise. Reckless young men lie on their stomachs, daring one another to draw closer to the rock's edge.Exhibition Label, Smithsonian American Art Museum, 2006
