Thomas Potter TP Cooke, Actor. 1p ALS (Autograph Letter Signed) on blind embossed 'T P C' personal lettersheet, dated 'Jan 22 1863', addressed to ... Pugh Esq. Letter reads:

'My Dear Sir
I accept with great pleasure, the polite invitation, of your "…", To dine with the Society of "Barnard's Inn", on the 25th of Feb'y, and with kindest regards to yourself and family…'

The Society of Barnard's Inn was the governing body of Barnard's Inn, a historic Inn of Chancery located in Holborn, London. Established in 1454, the society managed the inn, which functioned as a place of legal education and residential chambers for law students and attorneys for centuries.

Thomas Potter Cooke (Apr 1786 – Apr 1864) was an English actor.In January 1804, Cooke made his stage début at the Royalty Theatre in Wellclose Square. He was then engaged by Astley for Astley's Amphitheatre where he appeared as Lord Nelson. He subsequently played at the Lyceum, and then joined the company of Henry Erskine Johnston, who opened a theatre in Peter Street, Dublin. In 1809 he was engaged by Robert William Elliston as stage manager of the Surrey Theatre, where he remained a favourite

PROVENANCE:

One of c.2,500+ items once from the collection or dealer stock of Winifred A Myers (Autographs) Ltd, St Martins Lane, London, evidenced by the quantity of Myers pre-printed envelopes and paper folders and the general ‘presentation’ of the items, many having Myers identification notes in pencil.

Winifred Alice Myers (1909 - 1985) served as ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers Assoc) president, 1950-1952. See the ABA website for an extended article on Myers. Myers left her business, in 1985, to Ruth Shepherd, who traded from home until 2004.
