Pier 54 Artifact: This item contains a GENUINE fragment of the pier entrance to Pier 54! After Titanic infamously struck an iceberg on the night of April 14th, 1912, she sent distress signals alerting other ships in the area to the emergency at hand, requesting immediate assistance. A nearby ship, RMS Carpathia, received the Titanic's distress call, steaming toward the doomed Titanic at full speed ahead through the night! Although Carpathia did not make it in time before she sank, Carpathia was able to rescue Titanic's survivors that were in lifeboats! After bringing all of the survivors onboard as well bring the lifeboats themselves, it began its journey to New York. After reaching New York City on April 18th, 1912, Carpathia dropped of Titanic's survivors at pier 54! Pier 54 was the first ground the survivors of Titanic were met with following the disaster. Today, only the front entrance archway of Pier 54 remains standing. Many have lost their loved ones, their prized possessions, and walking away from the disaster with entirely different lives. The artifact in this display comes directly from that very front entrance that every survivor of the Titanic had walked through after first entering New York City!
