Original U.S. Model 1892 Krag-Jørgensen Bayonet, dated 1896, with M1899 Swivel Scabbard
This is an original U.S. Model 1892 bayonet made by Springfield Armory for the Krag-Jørgensen rifle, the U.S. Army’s first repeating rifle. The Krag was the standard U.S. service rifle during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War.
Markings: The ricasso is stamped “US” on one side and dated “1896” on the other. Both stamps are clear and legible (see close-up photos). 1896 is one of the scarcer Krag bayonet dates.
Blade: Single-edged with a fuller. Approximately 11 3/4\" long, 16 1/4\" overall. The blade shows staining, patina and light pitting, consistent with age. Not sharpened. It has not been cleaned or polished.
Hilt: Walnut grips held by two rivets. The grips are worn but intact. The steel guard, muzzle ring and bird’s-head pommel have surface rust and pitting. The pommel catch is frozen with rust and does not move. It has not been forced or disassembled.
Scabbard: A later-pattern M1899 steel scabbard with ball finial, swivel arm and wire belt bail. The swivel pivots freely, and the wire bail is present and opens as designed. The scabbard has heavy surface rust, a rust-through hole near the throat, and old white paint on the throat. The bayonet is dated 1896 and the scabbard is a later pattern, so they were not originally issued together. This is a common pairing for Krag bayonets.
Condition summary: An honest, uncleaned, as-found example. It would be a good display piece or a companion to a Krag rifle, or a candidate for careful conservation. Please review all photos closely, as they are part of the description and show the condition accurately.
