Item: US Navy USMC Marine WW2 Pilot Sedgley Flare Pistol Mark 1 Khaki Cartridge Belt
Markings:Stamped "'U.S.N.'" at the interior left front, along with the nomenclature, "CARTRIDGE BELT / MARK 1", its maker, "A.L. SIEGEL CO. INC.", and the date, "1943". These markings are very difficult to even see due to how tight that interior left end is folded over, and the fact that it's riveted means it can't be opened up for a better view.
Condition:This cartridge belt is in Good Condition. A sizable spot of fraying in the bottom right edge. The securing "prong" of the interior left adjusting end broke off long ago and is lost to history; that end has been secured to the belt by a brass rivet screw through the middle front grommet. Some brownish and dark soiling throughout. Some light scattered surface nicking throughout. Boasts a fully functional brass front buckle, sports all 32 of the original, fully intact khaki web cartridge loops, and featurestwo thin horizontal lines of navy blue "ticking" throughout.
Historical Background:The US Navy in WW2 included the Sedgley flare pistol as part of the survival equipment on every inflatable life raft used by flight crews in emergencies. It was also used on bombers and patrol planes "coming in on a wing and a prayer" to signal wounded aboard. The vital flares for the Sedgley were carried on the specially designed Mk. 1 looped cartridge belt.
