An original 6.5x9.5" vintage photo (NOT a modern reprint) from a rare U.S. Marine Corps photo collection.
This original, first-generation photo is from a massive photo collection compiled by Mrs Marion Fischer. It contained over 500 mostly USMC press and personal photos spanning from Pearl Harbor through the Korean War. Much of her collection is now part of the USMC archives referenced as Coll/858. Other parts of it, such as this photo collection, were sold by her estate.

One Marine is caught in mid-stride leaping from the open cargo door while others rush across the dirt track toward the tree line beyond.
The image documents the pioneering era of Marine Corps vertical envelopment doctrine, when helicopter squadron HMR-161 and its supporting units were revolutionizing how Marines would be delivered into battle. The photograph is a genuine first-generation print from the collection of Mrs Marion Fischer, a friend of the Marine Corps whose extensive archive of Navy and USMC photographs spanned Pearl Harbor through the Korean War.
Historical Notes
The Quantico helicopter demonstrations of the early 1950s were central to the Marine Corps\' development of "vertical envelopment," a doctrine born from the amphibious landing lessons of World War Two and the vulnerability revealed by atomic weapons to massed beachhead forces. The concept was first formalized in the 1948 doctrinal publication known as "Phib-31." Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron HMR-161 became the first Marine unit to employ helicopters in combat, arriving in Korea in 1951 and executing Operation Bumblebee, the first helicopter-borne troop lift in combat history. The doctrine demonstrated in fields like this one at Quantico matured into the airmobile tactics that would define the Vietnam War and remain the foundation of Marine air-ground task force operations to this day. The Sikorsky HO4S/HRS series pictured here evolved directly into the workhorse H-34 and eventually the CH-46 and CH-53 platforms.

Print analysis
This is an original first-generation gelatin silver photograph, a Type 1 print produced contemporaneously with the event in 1952. The rich tonal range, sharp detail, matte photographic surface, and period pencil annotation on the reverse all support this. Age-related staining and toning are present on the back but the emulsion side remains crisp and detailed, consistent with an original press or documentary print from the Marion Fischer collection.
