In Hawkeye sports, football was more of a setup for the following year, the year for a good men's basketball team unfortunately ended in the first round of NCAA tournament and Gable's' wrestling team remained dominate. In women's basketball, Coach Vivian Stringer's Hawkeyes ranked 3rd in the country and that convinced 22,157 fans to pack Carver to set a new attendance record for NCAA women basketball that stood for 21 years.
