This is a listing for a natural petrified wood branch from Hurricane, Utah. The cellular replacement of this tree bark is outstanding. This specimen is clearly a tree branch.

You can clearly see the bark of the wood and all the unique and interesting natural features of a tree that was alive at the same time as dinosaurs. It also is UV reactive, glowing orange under the 365 nm wavelength.

The petrified wood found in Hurricane, Utah, belongs to the Late Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era and is roughly 200 to 225 million years old.

​Most of the petrified wood in this region is found within the Chinle Formation.

During the Late Triassic, Hurricane  wasn\'t a desert; it was a vast, tropical river basin located much closer to the equator.

Giant conifer trees (most commonly Araucarioxylon arizonicum) grew along riverbanks. When these trees died or were knocked over by floods, they were quickly buried by sediment, mud, and or volcanic ash.

Because these tries were buried and cut off from oxygen, it prevented the wood from rotting. Over millions of years, the silica-rich groundwater (often from volcanic ash) seeped into the trees, evaporated and left the minerals to replace the wood.
