Historical Significance
• The Golden Age of Aviation: The National Air Races were a massive draw during the 1930s and 1940s, featuring legendary pilots like Amelia Earhart and Roscoe Turner competing in high-speed, closed-course pylon racing.
• The End of an Era: The 1949 races (held over Labor Day weekend from September 3–5) marked the final year the event was held in Cleveland. During the Thompson Trophy Race, pilot Bill Odom lost control of his modified P-51C fighter plane and crashed into a suburban home in nearby Berea, killing himself and two residents. Consequently, local municipalities banned air racing in their airspace, effectively ending Cleveland's multi-decade run as the epicenter of air racing.
