The thick twisted glass perimeter has the sculptural, rope-like appearance associated with Murano Venetian glassmaking, while the combination of clear glass, aged brass-tone metal, mirror and rich burgundy backing gives the piece a distinctly Art Deco / early Hollywood Regency decorative character.
The construction is particularly interesting, with the heavy twisted glass perimeter secured to the frame by four substantial ribbed metal bands. The frame has a wonderfully dimensional quality that photographs beautifully and makes it an especially eye-catching decorative piece.
The design is reminiscent of documented Barovier & Toso twisted-glass mirrors and picture frames, including examples from the Art Deco and mid-century periods. I am listing this as “Barovier & Toso Style” rather than making a definitive maker attribution, as I have not located a maker's mark on this example.
Condition
The mirror retains its older original appearance, including visible foxing, spotting, silver loss and surface wear consistent with age. The metal components display age-related patina and wear, and there are signs of age/use to the rear and backing.
The mirror and frame have intentionally not been aggressively cleaned or refinished, preserving the character and aged appearance of the piece.
