Offered here is an original 1966 stock certificate issued by the Monon Railroad Company, featuring the printed signatures of W.C. (William C.) Coleman, President, and John B. Goodrich, Vice President & Legal Counsel. This certificate represents an authentic piece of American railroad and corporate history from the final years of an iconic Midwest railway.

• W.C. Coleman – President (headed the Monon during its 1960s modernization and coal-haul expansion)

The Monon Railroad

• Chartered in 1847 as the New Albany & Salem Railroad, later renamed the Monon Railroad (from the junction town of Monon, Indiana).

• Operated passenger and freight service throughout Indiana, connecting Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville, and the state’s major universities.

• Known for its “Hoosier Line” branding and distinctive red-and-gray locomotives.

• Played a vital role in coal transport, agricultural shipping, and wartime logistics through the mid-20th century.

• In the 1960s, under W.C. Coleman’s leadership, the Monon sought to modernize operations and expand coal-hauling infrastructure on the Ohio River and Great Lakes.

• Merged into the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) in 1971, ending its independent existence.

Condition: I am not a professional and this comes from my father’s antique stock and bond collection. Given its age, I think it looks good. There is normal age related toning and foxing; cancellation holes; normal age related edge wear and some stains. Please see photos and ask questions.
