VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPH

THIS LISTING;VTG. PHOTOS. SCRAPBOOK OF EARLY AMERICAN AVIATION PIONEERS. Late 1920s to 1940s.

The scrapbook captures the grassroots, open-cockpit era of commercial aviation, barnstorming, and early flight training in the American Midwest.

30 Original Black-and-White Photographs:A cohesive, primary-source photo archive. The majority of the prints are permanently glued to the original pages, preserving the creator's intended contextual layout.

Historic News Clippings:Curated archival clippings that highlight monumental engineering feats, including the 1929 world-record flight of the GermanDornier Do X(carrying 169 people), the development of the Navy'sConsolidated PB2Y Coronado, and the complex seaplane base infrastructure required to run floating operations.

The March 1929 "Anchor" Photo:A rare, loose photograph featuring handwriting on the back that explicitly identifies prominent historical aviators. It places the collection directly at the famousNicholas-Beazley Airplane CompanyandMarshall Flying Schoolin Missouri, featuring legendary pilots like Hollywood stuntmanArt Goebeland record-shattering test pilotBarney Zimmerley.

You can see the men standing in a flat, muddy airfield field dressed in the characteristic styles of early pilots—ranging from sharp suits and ties to heavy leather riding boots, breeches, and thick flight jackets designed to ward off the freezing open-cockpit winds. On the far right edge of the frame, you can see the dark curve of a vintage aircraft propeller and nose cowling.

The handwritten note on the back of this loose photo provides an incredible, specific historical anchor for your album. It names a group of legendary Golden Age aviators gathered together inMarch 1929.

  • The names connect directly to theNicholas-Beazley Airplane Companyand theMarshall Flying Schoolin Marshall, Missouri, which was one of the largest and most famous aviation training grounds in the United States during the late 1920s.Reading left to right, the note records the following men:
    1. Tommy Webber– Flight Instructor (with a side note indicating "Nicholas-Beazley").
    2. "The Pard"– A casual nickname, likely referring to a close flying partner or business associate.
    3. (Barney) D.S. Zimmerley– Chief Test Pilot. Dwight "Barney" Zimmerley was a highly celebrated barnstormer and aviation pioneer who broke several world altitude, distance, and endurance records during this exact era.
    4. Arthur (Art) Goebel– Noted as a "(Visitor)".Art Goebelwas a famous Hollywood stunt pilot, a member of the "13 Black Cats" aerial daredevil troupe, and the winner of the historic, grueling 1927 Dole Race from Oakland to Honolulu.
    5. L.H. Rhiner– Flight Instructor, also noted under "Nicholas-Beazley". March 1929 was an incredibly active time for these specific men. For context,Art Goebelopened his own famous flight school in Missouri in 1929, and just a few months after this photo was taken, Barney Zimmerley made headlines across North America by flying a Nicholas-Beazley plane non-stop from Texas to Canada to shatter the world light-plane distance record. The scrapbook serves as a preserved physical record of a bypassed path in human engineering—capturing the exact decades before global runway infrastructure permanently shifted the world toward land-based aircraft.
