The handwritten caption reads, “Taft speaking in Beloit Wis.” A contemporary September 1908 newspaper account confirms that Taft spoke before a large Beloit crowd that included Beloit College students, who reportedly greeted the candidate with their college yell.
Taft was campaigning for the presidency when this photograph was taken. He defeated William Jennings Bryan in the November 1908 election and became the 27th president of the United States.
An excellent crossover collectible combining presidential campaign history, Wisconsin local history, railroad transportation, political photography, and a substantial crowd scene.
Condition:
Postally used with writing, a Beloit, Wisconsin postmark, and one-cent Benjamin Franklin stamp. Small area of surface loss along the left edge with general age-related wear as shown. The historic image remains strong and detailed.
