Rare Authentic 1930s Art Deco Japanese Export Rayon Brocade Kimono Duster Robe
Collectible piece of pre-WWII textile history. This authentic late 1930s Japanese export robe features a heavy-weight, luxurious double-faced rayon brocade that offers a gorgeous drape and brilliant high-sheen contrast.
Rooted in the striking "Taisho Roman" Art Deco design movement, the garment showcases a bold, architectural bright yellow shoulder yoke framing a deep black floral jacquard body, anchored by a contrasting royal blue hem.
Exquisite Traditional Motifs:
• Yoke: Cascading Wisteria (Fuji) symbolizing longevity and elegance.
• Body & Hem: Vibrant Chrysanthemums (Kiku) paired with the Imperial Carriage Wheel (Genji Guruma), traditional symbols of prosperity and nobility.
Premium Pre-War Craftsmanship & Construction:
• True Double-Faced Brocade: The intricate floral patterns are woven directly into the fabric fabric, mirroring flawlessly on the interior with inverted colors (no messy float threads).
• Hand-Finished Detailing: Features meticulous, authentic hand-stitching securing the interior of the blue hem binding.
• Tailored Seams: All vertical structural panels are finished with clean, flat-felled rolled seams to completely enclose raw edges and prevent fraying.
• Provenance: Retains a fragment of its original woven cloth loop tag at the neckline reading "MADE IN JAPAN" (pre-dating the post-war "Occupied Japan" era).
In good vintage condition for age. No tears or rips. Some worn fabric. But in pretty good shape for being 90 or so years old.
