Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible mid-century vintage textured canvas-tweed train case steeped in transatlantic maritime history. Measuring a compact 12\" x 8\" x 7\", this \"overnight\" vanity case was designed to stay by a passenger\'s side in their cabin during the golden age of travel.
This piece features extraordinary, authentic pre-World War II travel ephemera firmly affixed to the exterior, making it a spectacular display piece for collectors of ocean liner memorabilia, antique luggage, or historic props.
Historical Provenance & Labels
This case tells a fascinating story of international travel on the eve of WWII:
Top Lid: Features a large, bold orange Cunard Line Stateroom Baggage label. The bottom corner features the authentic British printing press mark \"SS/838\", dating its production to August 1938.
Front Panel: Retains a rare blue and white Cunard White Star Tourist Class baggage label featuring a large porter letter \"G\".Double U.S. Customs Stamps: This bag cleared customs on at least two separate voyages! It features a vintage white paper U.S. Customs Service Inspected Baggage stamp on the top lid, and a second, pinkish-red U.S. Customs Service stamp with serial number 145122 R on the side. Both feature the official Treasury Department seal and original inspector cancelation marks.
Interior & Hardware Details
Interior: Lined in a deep wine/burgundy embossed faux-leather fabric. Features original stitched leather loop straps designed to hold vintage glass cosmetic bottles upright. The raw wood backing on the inside lid features authentic handwritten charcoal/crayon marks, including a circled \"(6)\".
Hardware: Solid brass side accents, rear hinges, and front latches.
Condition Report (Please Read)
This item is sold AS-IS with a beautiful, authentic vintage patina. Please review all photos closely:
Handle: The original leather handle shows severe dry rot, deep cracking, and surface finish loss. It is wrapped in vintage black tape at the base. It is fragile and recommended for display use only, not for carrying heavy weight.
Canvas: The mustard-yellow tweed canvas is intact and sturdy, with a prominent vintage water tide-mark stain on the lower back panel and minor scuffs consistent with age.
Latches/Locks: The key is missing. The right latch springs open cleanly. The left latch functions but does not always \"catch\" automatically; the button must be slid over manually to lock it into place.
Interior: The original lid mirror or vanity pouch is missing, leaving the raw wood and marks exposed. The bottom lining shows dark staining from a past cosmetic/perfume spill. The long leather bottle strap is detached from its left-side rivet.
