One menu is specifically dated Saturday, February 9, 1957 and features Mamma Leone’s portrait, extensive dinner and wine selections, and the restaurant’s famous Will Rogers story. The other two are impressive large-format illustrated fold-out menus featuring restaurant history, photographs, artwork, banquet information and period food and wine prices.
One of the large menus incorporates a Mamma Leone’s postcard, which was actually used and mailed to Sanford, Florida. The handwritten message mentions seeing Man of La Mancha and visiting the United Nations, making it an interesting piece of period New York travel history in its own right.
Also included are two Mamma Leone’s matchbooks from different eras/styles. One contains approximately 28 matches. The second contains one remaining unstruck match.
A particularly attractive lot for collectors of vintage New York City memorabilia, restaurant menus, Italian-American history, ephemera, Broadway/theater-era NYC material, advertising or matchbooks.
