NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION & HISTORY
A remarkably preserved, highly entertaining piece of Southern California dining history, this multi-panel tri-fold menu from De Palma's Italian Village features a treasure trove of classic mid-century restaurant humor. The cover introduces a bold caricature of the host, Giuseppe, while the interior panels are loaded with comedic pearls and proverbs, including:"You shaka and shaka the catsupa botta...","You should never start a diet on an empty stomach,"and the header"Liquor is quicker, but Wine is fine."It also features an elaborate, narrative history panel detailing the scandalous historical origins of Zuppa Inglese (Rum Torte) involving Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton.
The menu maps out two historic Southern California operations: the Willow Street location in the oil-rich enclave of Signal Hill (Long Beach) and in the historic clay-mining town of Alberhill (Lake Elsinore). The menu offers a nostalgic look at classic dining prices, featuring a Bouillabaisse for $6.50, complete 7-course Italian style dinners starting at $2.65, and a "Pizzarami with Everything" for $2.95. The physical item measures approximately 12.5 inches in height and has a nominal weight of under 1 ounce (approx. 0.08 lbs / 36 grams). A phenomenal display piece for collectors of California ephemera, vintage advertising, or mid-century comedy.
