This original vintage Waverly decorator fabric looksfresh from a 1950s time-capsule of post-modern design. The appropriately named“Manhattan Towers” print features an abstract geometric grid and great midcentury colors of burnt orange, brown and gold on pale aqua.
The selvage reads “Manhattan Towers,” “Registered#931586” and “A Waverly Bonded Fabric.” The remnant measures a generous 47”wide x 3½ continuous yards long. This is an authentic vintage piece, dating tothe late 1950s or early 1960s.
The Manhattan Towers name is particularly evocative ofthe design. The intersecting lines and floating rectangles have the appearanceof an abstracted modern cityscape, skyscraper façade or grid of windows—verymuch in keeping with the architectural modernism of the period.
The metallic portions make this eye-catching andinteresting. The gold-colored lines have a textured, stippled appearance, withtiny flecks of metallic pigment extending beyond the edges of the grid.
The fabric itself is lightweight, fluid and semi-sheer,with a subtle sheen. It has the hand and appearance of rayon or arayon/synthetic blend, although the fiber content has not been tested.
Condition is excellent vintage. The fabric appearsremarkably fresh for its age, with strong colors and a beautiful metallicsurface. There are no issues and this was well-stored. Please examine the photos,which are part of the description.
