Vintage 1960s 35mm Slides Neon Signs NYC NY Jon Henry SUNY Albany Lot of 20: $200.00
Up for sale a rare, original lot of 20 vintage mid-century 35mm photographic slides documenting iconic American roadside architecture, defunct regional branding, and commercial neon sign typography. This curated 20-slide sheet serves as an incredible time capsule of the late 1960s and 1970s commercial landscape across New York State and the Northeast. The photographs feature a striking mix of legendary national fast-food chains, extinct regional favorites, and classic localized storefront trades.Historical Provenance & Archive ContextThese transparencies originate from a mid-century documentary survey. Several slides bear the official stamp of the Educational Communication Center at SUNY Albany, while others feature the studio stamp of noted photographer and artist Jon Henry, complete with his historic Manhattan studio address (100 W. 23rd St., New York, NY). Henry studied under the legendary Abstract Expressionist painter Robert Motherwell, a influence that clearly shines through in the bold, graphic framing, high contrast, and pop-art sensibilities of these nighttime neon compositions.Featured Subjects Included on This Sheet: - NEBA Roast Beef: The iconic, defunct cow-shaped neon sign from the legendary Albany-born fast-food chain.
- Vintage Burger King: A rare look at the mid-century "Bun Halves" corporate logo complete with a glowing "Whopper" sign underneath.
- Howard Johnson’s: The timeless orange-and-blue sign advertising their classic "Ice Cream – 28 Flavors."
- Mid-Century Storefront Trades: Multiple specialized neon signs detailing rapid service business models of the era, including "Soles & Heels in 15 Minutes" and "While U Wait".
- Vernacular Americana: Vibrant neon typography featuring local neighborhood bars, beverage centers, and regional restaurants like the "Hong Kong Inn".
Condition & Specifications: - Format: Original 35mm Color Film Transparencies (Kodak Ektachrome).
