Manufacturer Information
The Otagiri Mercantile Company (OMC) was a premier Japanese-American ceramic importer that operated from the mid-20th century until its acquisition in 1994. Headquartered as an import business in San Francisco, Otagiri partnered directly with highly skilled independent pottery studios, artisans, and kilns throughout Japan to manufacture upscale novelty tableware, music boxes, and figural banks. These handcrafted items were distributed selectively to high-end gift shops and department stores across the West. Pieces carrying the distinctive gold foil shield label and engraved signatures from the 1980 peak era remain highly sought-after by retro pop-culture and Japanese pottery enthusiasts today.
