The real Tusitala was a historic three-masted, full-rigged sailing ship built in 1883. She later sailed under the American flag and is recognized as the last full-rigged merchant sailing ship to fly the American flag. In 1929, the year represented on this model, Tusitala was still engaged in commercial sailing trade.
