Vintage 1985 Hokkaido Hand Carved Katsura Wood Salmon Wall Relief Folk Art Japan For Sale

Description

🌸 DescriptionA striking vintage hand-carved wooden salmon wall relief from Hokkaido, Japan.Dating to 1985 during the Showa era, this piece represents the distinctive tradition of Hokkaido folk wood carving. The sculpture is made from Katsura wood and mounted against a natural-edge wooden base that retains the rustic character of the original wood. One of the most impressive features is the detailed scale carving covering the body of the salmon. Numerous carefully repeated chisel cuts create a rhythmic scale pattern that catches the light and gives the fish a highly textured and lifelike appearance. The head depicts the dramatic hooked-nose form associated with a mature male salmon during the spawning season. The curved muzzle, open mouth, visible teeth, deeply modeled gills, and sharply carved facial details give the fish a powerful expression. The coloration also enhances the three-dimensional effect. Darker tones along the upper body gradually transition through gray tones toward the lighter natural wood color below, producing an appearance reminiscent of traditional Japanese ink painting. The natural bark-edge base adds further rustic character and emphasizes the connection between the carving and the natural material from which it was made.An inscription reading “大雪” (Taisetsu) can be seen on the piece. This is an attractive decorative piece for collectors of Japanese folk art, Hokkaido crafts, fishing decor, wildlife sculpture, Showa-era objects, or traditional wood carving.⚙️ FeaturesHand Carved, Vintage 1985, Katsura Wood, Salmon Fish Design, Detailed Scale Carving, Hooked Nose Salmon, Open Mouth, Carved Teeth, Natural Bark Edge, Natural Wood Grain, Gradient Finish, Wall Mounted, Hokkaido Folk Art📏 Size & MeasurementsItem Length:40 cm / 15.75 inItem Height:14 cm / 5.51 inItem Width:3 cm / 1.18 inWeight:350 g / 0.77 lb / 12.35 oz🧾 ConditionPre-owned vintage condition. The piece remains in good overall condition considering its age.Minor scratches, marks, discoloration, rubbing, and other signs of previous display or long-term storage may be present. Please carefully review all photographs for the exact cosmetic condition before purchasing.📦 Included1 × Vintage Hand-Carved Wooden Salmon Wall ReliefNo original box or additional accessories are included.🏮 NotesThis piece was acquired as a traditional craft item from Hokkaido, Japan. An inscription reading “大雪” (Taisetsu) appears on the piece.
