This is #2 of 3 masks I have for sale. This one also has some clothing moth damage from improper storage, it's in about the worst condition of the 3. It is still shedding a little and parts of the ruff are bald. I think it can be restored without too much trouble, the skin and shape are all still in excellent condition.
These masks are made of Caribou hide stretched and dried onto a mold. The trim and facial hair is sewn on with what appears to be sinew. They are from the early to late 1960's and were all owned by my family from when they were new.
These were made by various artists from the Anaktuvik pass area in Alaska, there is a photo of one artist working some similar masks. This one is signed on a piece of cardboard sewn in by "Elijah Kakinya" as near as I can decipher the last name.
My father was a surveyor in Alaska in the mid 60's and traveled all over Alaska working. He purchased these from local artists in his travels. I can remember playing with them as kids in 1967 so we have had them in the family a long time. The photo of the boy wearing the mask was my brother in Fairbanks in 1967. This is the same mask!
I do combine shipping if you buy more than one item.
