Vintage hand-carved African praying Madonna / Virgin Mary sculpture. Beautifully carved from a very dense, dark hardwood with rich brown-to-black coloration and a polished finish.

The figure depicts the Madonna with her head covered by a long flowing mantle and her hands together in prayer. Detailed carving includes facial features, individual fingers, necklace/garment decoration, small exposed feet, and a deeply carved two-tier scalloped base.

The carving measures approximately 12 inches tall and weighs an impressive 2 lb 10.8 oz, indicating a particularly dense hardwood. The wood appears consistent with African blackwood (mpingo) or ebony-type wood often associated with East African carving.
