A wonderfully unusual and fully functional vintage BMF musical beer stein, made in West Germany and featuring the traditional German Postillion, or postal-coach driver, theme.This is much more than an ordinary decorative beer mug. When the ornate lid is opened, the concealed mechanical music box begins playing, combining three areas of German collecting: traditional beer steins, mechanical music boxes, and historic postal-coach memorabilia.The heavy molded glass body is richly decorated with a colorful wraparound scene showing a bright yellow postal coach traveling through the German countryside. The lively composition includes running horses, passengers, a uniformed postillion sounding his horn, village buildings, a distant hilltop castle, flowers, and scrolling borders. Two panels contain an old-style German verse celebrating the coachman, his horses, and the foaming barley drink served by the innkeeper.A charming feature is the three-dimensional postal horn finial mounted on top of the lid, complete with its original-looking twisted red-and-white cord. The horn relates directly to the Postillion subject and forms part of the musical mechanism’s winding assembly.The substantial domed metal lid displays elaborate cast scrollwork, decorative borders, an ornamental thumb lift, and naturally aged dark patina.
