Description
Matching pair of vintage hand-carved Indonesian/Balinese hardwood sculptures depicting mothers with children. Sold together as a two-piece set.
Beautifully executed figurative carvings featuring two complementary motherhood scenes. The taller sculpture depicts a mother surrounded by several children, including a nursing child, while the smaller companion sculpture depicts a seated mother holding a child.
The two pieces share remarkably similar facial features, hairstyles, proportions, carving techniques, and dark polished finish, suggesting they were produced by the same workshop or closely related artisan tradition.
The sculptures appear to be individually hand carved from solid, dense tropical hardwood. Fine incised lines in the hair, individually modeled facial features, hands and children, together with natural variations in the carving, show evidence of hand workmanship rather than molded construction. The dark polished finish highlights attractive brown and nearly black natural wood grain.
The styling is strongly associated with the traditional figurative woodcarving of Bali, Indonesia. The exact artisan, village, wood species, and date of manufacture are unknown.
An old handwritten paper label remains on the unfinished underside of one sculpture. The faded writing appears to include “Rp” and possibly “85,000,” consistent with Indonesian rupiah price notation and providing additional evidence supporting Indonesian origin. Because the handwriting is faded, the exact original price cannot be guaranteed.
Likely a late-20th-century decorative/artisan pair, possibly dating from approximately the 1980s–1990s. The exact age has not been independently authenticated.
Taller sculpture: approximately 10.5” high.
Please see the ruler and photographs for additional dimensions and scale.
A striking matched decorative pair displaying the craftsmanship, warm natural grain, and distinctive stylized forms associated with Indonesian/Balinese woodcarving.
Sold as a pair — 2 sculptures included.
