VINTAGE FOLK ART BIRD EFFIGY SCULPTURE
EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY

DIMENSIONS
About 13\" x 4 1/2\" x 4 1/2\"
DESCRIPTION
Hand-carved hardwood sculpture depicting a stylized bird with a large rounded head, prominent eyes, and an elongated, open beak. Solid wood, no moving parts. The boldly simplified form has a distinctive primitive folk-art appearance. Traces of white pigment remain on portions of the surface, with traces of red coloring visible on the tongue inside the beak. Has a weathered, time-worn surface, with visible carving tool marks. Extended open-beak form is suggestive of Pacific Northwest Native American work, such as Haida or Kwakiutl. But true origin remains unknown.
