Vintage Cherub Urn Vase 21\" Chalkware Neoclassical Greek Roman Marwal Rococo Art For Sale

Wonderful vintage Marwal Industries Inc. figural urn vase, dating to approximately the 1960s. This monumental decorative piece stands about 21 inches tall and features an elaborate Classical Revival design inspired by Greek and Roman ornament. Marwal produced decorative plaster/chalkware sculptures in the United States during the mid-20th century, and this large cherub urn is one of their especially striking designs.

The urn has an aged ivory/cream finish with muted olive and brown accents that give the relief work wonderful depth. The front is dominated by a large raised medallion depicting two cherubs carrying an overflowing garland or cluster of flowers and fruit, surrounded by molded beading, ribbons, swags and foliate ornament. Two classical female figures form sculptural handles along the shoulders, giving the vase a strong neoclassical or French-inspired appearance.

The wide flared neck is decorated with repeating molded motifs, while the body tapers into a fluted pedestal resting on a substantial stepped octagonal base. The combination of figural decoration, garlands, urn form and antiqued surface makes this especially well suited to Hollywood Regency, Neoclassical, Classical Revival, French Provincial, Rococo Revival or maximalist interiors.

The inside of the mouth is impressed “Marwal Ind. Inc.” along with the company emblem.

It measures approximately 21 inches tall, about 10 inches across at the widest point, with a base measuring approximately 7 inches wide.

This piece has age-related wear throughout, including scattered chips, finish loss, surface marks and small areas of exposed white plaster/chalkware. There is visible wear to portions of the raised figures, floral details, base and edges. The aged surface and accumulated patina give it considerable decorative character. I do not see evidence of a major structural break through the body.

This is a substantial and highly decorative example of mid-century Marwal production, with much more architectural presence than the smaller busts and figurines commonly associated with the company.

A dramatic old urn with decades of surface history still intact, the kind of piece that can anchor a mantel, console or collection all on its own.
