A vintage Chinese famille rose porcelain bottle vase retailed by Gump’s of San Francisco, dating to approximately 1950–1970. The vase features a rounded, bulbous body with a narrow neck—an interpretation of the traditional bianhu form, though executed in a more globular bottle style. The surface is completely enameled in the mille-fleurs (thousand flowers) motif, including peonies, lotus blossoms, chrysanthemums, and auspicious Buddhist symbols, all rendered over a brilliant gilded ground.
The base bears the Gump’s retailer’s mark, confirming it was imported and sold through the prestigious San Francisco department store, renowned for curating fine Asian decorative arts for American collectors and designers.
Gump’s collaborated during the mid-20th century with top workshops in Hong Kong and Taiwan, many of which employed Jingdezhen-trained artisans, to produce exceptional “Qing Revival” porcelains for the Western market. These pieces were directly inspired by Guangxu and late-Qing imperial mille-fleurs designs, but exhibit modernized color palettes and refined gilt overglaze enameling techniques.
