Vintage Hand-Carved Chinese Wooden Mooncake & Pastry Mold – 10" Double Fish Design
Up for sale is a beautiful, authentic vintage Asian wooden pastry mold featuring a highly detailed, hand-carved "Double Fish" motif. This style of mold was traditionally used to press festive mooncakes, Nian Gao (New Year rice cakes), or regional flour confections.
Design & Symbolism:
The cavity features a unique double-eyed fish sharing one body. In Chinese folklore, the double fish (Shuangyu) is a classic symbol of marital harmony, happy unions, and a doubling of wealth, abundance, and good luck.
Craftsmanship Details:
This is a true artisan piece, completely hand-hewn. The back and handle display prominent, authentic adze and chisel marks left by the craftsman. Hardened white starch/rice flour residue remains packed deep into the crevices of the fish scales, offering a wonderful glimpse into its functional baking history.
Condition:
Excellent vintage/antique condition with a gorgeous, dark rustic patina. The wood shows natural aging, minor grain separation on the back, and surface wear consistent with historical kitchen use. The edges of the cavity are smoothly worn from decades of pressing dough. Please review the photos to assess the detailed condition.
Dimensions:
• Total Length: 10 inches
• Total Width: 3 inches
• Thickness: 0.75 inches
• Mold Cavity Length: Approx. 4.5 inches
This piece is perfect as a rustic kitchen display item, an addition to a collection of Asian folk art, or as a unique stamp for pottery and clay crafts.
