I’m no hatchet specialist but my research concluded the following information and it may differ from that of yourself.
Key Characteristics & History:
The "B47" Stamp:
The engraved code "847" on the red cheek indicates the production run or batch/factory code common to Collins tools of that era.
Design & Aesthetics:
This hatchet features the signature bright red painted head paired with a classic clear-varnished hickory handle. Collins was one of a handful of official manufacturers contracted by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to supply gear.
The Leather Sheath:
The vintage leather sheath underneath it confirms its scout heritage, featuring handwritten markings detailing "Troop 86" and the original owner's name and address from Concord, New Hampshire.
Used in overall good condition.
Shows expected signs of wear from use and age.
